The University Grants Commission (UGC) has expressed its discontent regarding universities not making efforts to create Transgender friendly infrastructure on campus. In an official circular issued by the universities, the UGC said, "you (universities) have spared no efforts to create Transgender friendly infrastructure such as toilets, bathrooms, etc .. Understandably, this will go a long way in Acclimatizes Transgender Students without facing any fear, stigma and shame. " The UGC has also said it plans to award academic major research projects that can, in collaboration with community members and other experts, undertook an ethnographic research on the life and culture of the transgender community.
"This type of research, you agree not only will lead to a better understanding of the subculture of transsexuals, but also helps to dispel myths belonging to the community rooted in popular discourse," said the circular. In October 2014, the UGC had directed all universities to reach Transgender-friendly infrastructure at universities across the nation following a Supreme Court ruling.
The UGC has also asked universities to convince faculty members to come forward and take such challenging and socially relevant research in the academic interest.
