Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama and goodwill ambassador for the eradication of leprosy, Yohei Sasakawa Thursday announced a grant of $ 100,000 per year for the education of children from families affected by leprosy.
The grant would dispense and administered jointly by Sasakawa India Leprosy Foundation (Silfo) and the Association of people affected by leprosy (APAL).
The Dalai Lama "is sincerely interested in issues related to leprosy and urged people not to discriminate against those who have been affected by the disease," said a representative of the Dalai Lama Trust.
"Many children living under the stigma, are isolated, their main reason is that they are part of society and promote them later," added the representative.
Yohei Sasakawa, said: "Coming from the Dalai Lama, himself, this scholarship is to promote safe communities affected by leprosy across the country and around the world."
