Rote no more: Hands-on approaches infuse freshness to education

Rote learning techniques have full-length Indian education system, where even "science is taught as history."

The infusion of freshness in a system where maximum gains notes have priority over understanding, experts have come up with solutions such as teaching mathematics through games - allowing students to go beyond the obvious.

"In our classrooms, science is taught as history - students is 'explained' concepts but do not get to explore, experiment and challenge! Our laboratories encourage children to find and verify what is written in the book rather than explore and challenge the concepts "Rakesh Kumar, founder Experifun told IANS.

It began in 2012, Experifun designs and develops curriculum based products affordable, innovative and exploratory science concepts to explore in the classroom.

They allow students and teachers to innovative science experiments and activities. The offer contains several kits that cover the entire range of science curricula and to Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (held from), Cambridge, International Baccalaureate and state commissions.

Agreed Priyadeep Sinha, founder Gyan Lab - a start-up working in the space of K-12 education (12 kg class) striving for fun learning - said the current education must more "application" based.

"What we have to realize and deeply understand is that 90 percent on tests should not be the ultimate goal of learning as in the real world, if you can not apply the learned loses to others who may not have scored better but can apply best knowledge. And to bring about a change in how education happens in this country, we must realize that a child, not a teacher, should be at the center of learning process in a classroom, "Sinha told IANS.

According to the 2007 report by the India job personal service company TeamLease, 90 per cent of employment opportunities require vocational skills but 90 per cent of the production of faculties and schools have bookish knowledge and 57 percent of youth India suffer some degree of unemployability.

The report also said that "the current educational system focuses on knowledge-based learning and memory, rather than the broad application development capabilities. While there have been numerous committees recommended that the government establish changes in the pattern of examination and course content, little has been done to transform the system. "

"There should be an approach" hands "that is oriented towards problem solving and not 'memorize without understanding,'" he said.

Gyan Lab and Experifun are not unique initiative to participate education students, encouraging them to apply their understanding better use.

There are others like Nayi Disha, which builds based educational games for preschoolers and ThinkLABS that instills a scientific temperament in students through innovative programs and prepares students for careers in robotics and embedded systems.

"We are using Experifun science kits in our school for a year. Levels of interest and conceptual understanding of students in science have improved since they can identify the concepts in the book with a real application," Manish Kumar, director and founder of the country, schools seed, Hyderabad, told IANS.

So what Nayi Disha games teach?

"All our games are centered around Kaju alien baby and the world around them. Each game begins with a visually rich history, where Kaju comes across something peculiar, gets into trouble or should help someone. As humans, we forget theories and formulas, but the stories are something that we unite. Starting with a story really builds a bridge between the child and the concepts she is learning, "founder of Nayi Disha Studios Kartik told IANS stale.

He added that once played in history, children have raised Kaju help achieve a given set of tasks through physical movements.

"No keyboard or mouse is used by children. They jump, clap, flap, agitated and stir to solve learning problems. Our games covering topics in mathematics, languages and general knowledge (including science)," said .

Shivangi Gaur, a father said that children prefer activities they undertake while also helping them to learn new concepts.

"These initiatives are needed because they keep students engaged and help them understand concepts better. Long, I trust in platforms like YouTube to add an extra touch while audiovisual teaching my son. And to my surprise, then it understands better "Gaur, said.
