No Sanskrit exams in KV schools this year: Government tells SC

The central government on Friday said the Supreme Court that the change over to German Sanskrit, will be a third language in Kendriya Vidyalayas Sanskrit but there will be no exams in this course.

Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi told a bench of Justice Anil. Justice Kurian Joseph R. Dave and the government has taken the decision without examining the current academic year in Sanskrit while addressing the concerns of the court and stress students you have suffered because of a switch mid-session.

The government made it clear that Germany would now an optional language.

"What is your objection? If my son is studying Sanskrit in addition to German, as a parent, I will accept it immediately. What the Attorney General said, what is wrong," asked Dave how justice lawyer petitioners Reema Singh sought to oppose the government's decision.

Describing the government's decision as "good solution", the court said it was unpleasant if our children learn Sanskrit stress and continues with the German. "All of us have children," said Dave indicating justice to justice Joseph Rohatgi and the Minister of the petitioners.

"There must be a way out. The matter was raised in Parliament yesterday. Everything Parliament supported the government," Rohatgi said the court saying that German is optional and not as a third language, while any examination will be carried out Sanskrit per year.

"A month has passed after the switch (the German Sanskrit). Returning to change would be a problem," he said.

The government's decision not to make Sanskrit exam in this academic year was in response to poser 28 Nov court asking the government not to treat Sanskrit as a third language for students of Kendriya Vidyalayas 6 to 8 class instead treated as an additional language, retaining German as a third language for the current academic year.

Since the petitioners' lawyers - parents of students affected by Kendriya Vidyalayas - wanted to seek instructions from clients in the last position of the government, the court adjourned the hearing until Monday.

Twenty aggrieved parents moved the apex court challenging the decision of the German government with Sanskrit as a third language in the middle of the session course replaced.

German was introduced as a third language in Kendriya Vidyalayas following the signing of the MoU between the Kendriya Vidyalaya, which means Sangthan and the Goethe-Institut Max Mueller Bhavan in 2011 to train teachers to teach German. The agreement, which was for three years, ending in 2014.

The Modi government, while introducing a third language like Sanskrit, has taken a position that the MoU between the Kendriya Vidyalaya, which means Sangthan and the Goethe Institut Max Mueller Bhavan in 2011 was illegal and was in violation of constitutional provisions. The decision of the government concerned Kendriya Vidyalaya, which means that 70,000 students were studying German.

The court hearings on the matter earlier told the government that under the Constitution, the formula says that three languages besides English and Hindi, students must learn a third language as a regional language.
