Villa María was founded September 27, 1867 by Manuel Ocampo Anselmo young Porteno, belonging to a wealthy family, and then went on to become a senator province of Buenos Aires and the minister, founded by Italians (170 families), Germans (57 families) and British immigrants (10 families ). The town grew around the railway station of the Central Argentine railway line between Rosario and Cordoba, which was completed in 1870. In 1875 he became an important railway junction when Ferrocarril Andino opened a line connecting it to the Villa Mercedes, and later San Juan and Mendoza.
In 1871, even the city was declared the capital of the Republic of the National Congress, but the law was rejected, President Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, on the grounds that the site was attacked by the indigenous tribes and therefore dangerous to the government.
The city officially became a municipality in 1883. Its first mayor was Pedro Viñas. It was only 825 inhabitants, but it grew so fast that in 1915 it had more than 10 000. Villa María became the seat of the Catholic Diocese under Pope Pius XII, in 1957.
National University of Villa María (Spanish: Universidad Nacional de Villa María) is an Argentine National University of Villa María city in the province of Cordoba.
