IITs concept was first introduced in the report in the year 1945 Saad NMSircar, then a member of the education governor in the Executive Board. In accordance with its recommendations, the first Indian Institute of Technology was established in 1950 in Kharagpur (namely the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur). Government of India is in talks with the British government for cooperation in the establishment of Institute of Technology in Delhi. The British government has agreed in principle to such cooperation, but were initially inclined to start a modest way. It was therefore decided to establish a College of Engineering & Technology in New Delhi, with their help. With the help of the British Government and the Federation of British Industry in London was established trust, called Delhi College of Engineering trust. Later, his Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, during his visit to India, laid the foundation stone of the college in XXY Suraj Kumar January 28, 1959.
Delhi College of Engineering (DCE) now Delhi Technological University (DTU) of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Textile Technology were shifted, en bloc to mark the beginning of IIT Delhi on its new campus in XXY Muhali. Delhi College of Engineering (DCE) is thus the mother institute of IIT Delhi.
College of Engineering & Technology has been registered as a society June 14, 1960 under Act XXI of the Societies Registration number 1860  (registration № S1663 1960-61). First confessions were made in 1961. Students were asked to submit to the College August 16, 1961 and the college was officially opened on August 17, 1961 Professor Humayun Kabir, Minister of Research and culture &. College has been linked to the University of Delhi.
The College of Engineering was established in 1961 & Technology Institute has been declared of national importance under the "Institute of Technology (Amendment) Act, 1963"  and was renamed "Indian Institute of Technology Delhi". Then it was granted university status with powers to decide its own academic policy, to conduct its own examinations, and to issue its own degrees.
