IAS Prelims 2014: Prepare better with sample question papers

The Indian Administrative Service (IAS) is one of the most sought after and difficult to resolve civil services examination. The single is the road leading to some of the most prestigious positions in the country.

Who has as IAS exam opens the door to key positions in the government of the Union commitments of governments and the public sector in the state. But one needs to first overcome the first obstacle is, civil services aptitude test (CSAT).

CSAT is the preliminary examination conducted by UPSC civil services in order to screen candidates eligible for the civil services examination Mains, if successfully cleaned help you land a job in the civil service. This year is the civil services preliminary examination to be held on 24 August 2014.

This might seem a bit overwhelming when it comes to preparing for these exams, so here are some points to IAS aspirants should consider while preparing for the civil services preliminary examination.

Paper pattern:

General Studies Paper I - (200 marks)
Duration: Two hours

Current events of national and international importance
History of India and Indian National Movement
Indian and World Geography - Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World
Indian Polity and Governance - Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights etc.
Economic and Social Development Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector initiatives, etc.
General issues on Environmental Ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change - that do not require subject specialization.
General Science.

General Science Paper II- (200 marks)
Duration: Two hours

Interpersonal skills including communication skills;
Logical reasoning and analytical ability
Decision-making and problem-solving
General mental ability
Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. - Class X level)
English Language Comprehension skills (Class X level).
Create a study schedule and adhere to it
Prepare a chart/diagram for Paper I that will help you understand the interlinking of the topics and make remembering them a lot easier
Write short notes point-wise for important topics to help you prepare
Solve previous year paper so that you are familiar to the kind of questions asked in the exam.
Always time yourself while solving sample papers to improve on your speed.
Widen your reading to help with English Comprehension
Solve puzzles to help with logical thinking
Use flash-cards to remember definitions
Current affairs are very important so it is necessary to stay updated with Newspapers, magazines and the internet
Focus on important events that have occurred over the past 5 years
Study the political science, economics and history portions from Class 10th and Class 12th books but don't spend too much time going in detail
To prepare for Paper II it is important to remember that all concepts are based from Class 10th
Revise mathematics and English Grammar from your Class 10th books
General Studies is a topic that is not easily exhausted; it is important to keep updating your knowledge throughout
